Join the Movement: Volunteer to Shape Young Readers
In today's world, literacy is more crucial than ever. Sadly, many children in Phoenix are struggling with reading. Reports indicate that only about 27% of third-graders in the area can read at grade level. However, you can become a beacon of hope and make a significant difference by volunteering with the AARP Foundation Experience Corps.
Why Reading Proficiency Is Essential
Your involvement as a volunteer tutor is essential for combating literacy issues. Research shows that children who cannot read at grade level by the end of third grade are four times more likely not to graduate high school. This crucial skill affects not only their academic success but also their future opportunities. With each child you mentor, you contribute meaningfully to altering this trend.
The Experience Corps Impact
The AARP Foundation Experience Corps offers trained volunteers aged 50 and older to work with second and third graders. This innovative intergenerational program has proven to improve literacy skills dramatically. According to data from the program, 99% of students receiving one-on-one coaching have shown substantial improvements in their reading abilities. Teachers have noted that these tutoring sessions enhance student attendance, reduce classroom disruptions, and encourage active participation.
What’s Required to Make a Difference?
To join this impactful initiative, you must be at least 50 years old, have a high school diploma, and commit to volunteering two days per week for a total of five hours. Additionally, volunteers undergo essential training sessions and must pass a background check. Imagine the joy you could bring into a child's life while also enriching your own!
A Win-Win Situation
Volunteering with Experience Corps isn't just about helping children. It’s also a fulfilling way to stay active and socially connected. Volunteers report feeling more fulfilled and engaged, citing improvements in both physical and mental well-being. The community you become part of is filled with like-minded individuals who care about fostering the next generation of readers.
