Affordability Meets Compassion: New Respite Service for Dementia Care
In an admirable initiative to support families navigating the challenges of dementia, a new low-cost respite service has been introduced in the Valley, offering a lifeline to caregivers. The collaboration between Arizona State University (ASU) and Hospice of the Valley aims to provide meaningful relief for families while engaging students in valuable service.
The program, aptly named RISE — Respite In Student Engagement — connects ASU students with families needing assistance at home or in care facilities. This creative partnership not only alleviates the financial burden on families but also enriches the lives of students, who provide companionship and emotional support to those living with dementia.
What Families Need to Know About RISE
For just $20 per hour, families can access services provided by RISE students, who undergo background checks and receive evidence-based dementia training from the Dementia Care and Education Campus in Phoenix. Importantly, the service is designed to offer respite through companionship rather than personal care tasks like hygiene or medication management.
A RISE Coordinator facilitates a matching process, ensuring that students and families can find a schedule that suits their needs. This careful consideration fosters a supportive environment conducive to both caregivers and care recipients.
Why It Matters
For many families, the emotional toll of caregiving can be overwhelming. Programs like RISE not only provide necessary breaks for caregivers but also help reduce feelings of isolation and stress. The involvement of ASU students creates a connection between generations, promoting understanding and empathy while equipping students with insights into dementia care.
As the Valley continues to grow in population, initiatives such as RISE highlight the importance of community support, especially in areas of health and social care. By engaging younger generations in caregiving contexts, we foster a culture of compassion and resilience that benefits all involved.
