Phoenix Airports Achieve New Sustainability Heights
The City of Phoenix Aviation Department has recently announced a groundbreaking achievement in environmental sustainability. Phoenix Deer Valley Airport (DVT) and Phoenix Goodyear Airport (GYR) have received Level 3 status in the Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) program for the 2024 reporting year. This accreditation recognizes the airports' dedication to carbon management and ongoing efforts to enhance their sustainability practices.
The Road to Carbon Neutrality
Chad Makovsky, the City of Phoenix Aviation Director, emphasized that this milestone represents a significant step in the department's sustainability commitment. The ACA Level 3 accreditation is awarded to airports that successfully measure and verify their carbon emissions and implement effective long-term carbon management plans. The recognition places DVT and GYR alongside Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, which has held the Level 4 certification since 2021, making Phoenix a leader in U.S. airport sustainability.
What Steps Were Taken?
To earn this prestigious accreditation, both DVT and GYR undertook comprehensive energy audits and identified key areas for conservation improvements. Strategies included:
- Energy efficiency upgrades through the installation of high-efficiency motors and LED lighting, leading to reductions exceeding 500 tons of carbon emissions.
- Transitioning to electric vehicles, further contributing to diminished fossil fuel usage.
- Progressing toward on-site renewable energy projects, such as solar installations that not only generate clean energy but also provide shaded parking.
These initiatives underscore the airports' determination to align with environmental goals communicated by both local and global entities.
Expanding Phoenix's Green Credentials
With over 630 airports worldwide participating in ACA, the achievement of Level 3 places DVT and GYR among a select group of airports recognized for their commitment to carbon management. As sustainability becomes a vital component of airport operations, Phoenix's comprehensive approach highlights the importance of collaboration with various stakeholders, including fixed-base operators and tenants. Such partnerships are integral to maximizing the impact of carbon-reduction strategies.
A Collaborative Future
The collective efforts of airport authorities and aviation stakeholders showcase how sustainability initiatives can benefit the environment while enhancing operational efficiency.
