Fire Continues to Rage in Buckeye
The Hazen Fire, a rapidly advancing brush fire in Buckeye, Arizona, has burned nearly 1,000 acres and remains 0% contained. The region, which includes the Buckeye Equestrian and Event Center, is covered in smoke, causing discomfort for residents and animals alike. "It’s kind of miserable with the wind blowing and the smoke smell," expressed Don Nahrgang, the general manager of the equestrian center, which houses around 300 cows, steers, and horses.
Challenges in Containing the Blaze
Firefighters are facing tough conditions as they combat the flames fueled primarily by dry salt cedar vegetation along a riverbed near State Route 85. Arizona's Deputy Fire Management Officer Todd Abel remarked on the unpredictability of wind patterns, complicating efforts to control the blaze. Crews are using bulldozers to clear fuels while receiving support from single-engine air tankers that drop water and fire retardant.

Describing the intensity of the situation, Nahrgang noted, "When you see a 100-foot wall of flames and black smoke… it was pretty intense." Thankfully, he reassured the community that currently, there is no threat to people, livestock, or structures. Local residents are supporting one another, showcasing the strength of community connections in times of danger.

Despite concerns, Nahrgang remains optimistic, stating, "We have so many good neighbors that have offered us places to go, but as of right now, we’re pretty confident with where we’re at." With ongoing investigations into the cause of the fire, officials are working tirelessly to mitigate risks and protect the community.
