Encouraging Young Voices in Poetry
The Arizona State Poetry Society is actively seeking to engage the creative minds of young poets across the state with its 2026 Annual Youth Contest. Kicking off on January 15, the contest invites students in grades one through twelve to submit their original poems, fostering a love for literature and self-expression among Arizona's youth.
Details of the Contest
This year, the society has made participation accessible by ensuring there is no entry fee. Students are allowed to submit poems on any topic, with the restriction of a maximum of three submissions. Designed to encourage diversity in thought and style, works written in languages other than English are welcome as long as they include an English translation.
Recognizing Talent Through Prizes and Publication
The contest aims to reward budding poets with cash prizes for the top three entries in three grade brackets: Grades 1-4, Grades 5-8, and Grades 9-12. Beyond monetary incentives, winners will have the honor of having their poems published in the upcoming anthology, “Sandcutters 2026.” This is a fantastic opportunity for students not just to win but to see their work appreciated and celebrated within the community.
Why Participation Matters
Engaging in poetry contests can profoundly impact students' confidence and communication skills. It fosters a sense of accomplishment and validates their creativity in an increasingly digital age. Being part of such artistic initiatives helps youth form connections with their peers and express their emotions through the power of words.
How to Participate
Submissions are due by April 1, and winners will be notified in May 2026, followed by the distribution of complimentary copies of "Sandcutters" at year’s end. For complete details and to access the necessary permission form, interested participants can reach out via email to outreach chair Christy White at christywhite.smp@azpoetry.net.
Encourage the young poets in your life to explore their creativity and share their unique perspectives through the art of poetry. It’s an invitation to be heard and to paint the world with their words.
