Weekend Travel Alert: Major Freeway Restrictions in Phoenix
The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) has issued a travel advisory for metro Phoenix this weekend, from April 17 to 20, due to significant freeway closures intended for improvement projects. If you're planning to hit the road, drivers should prepare for detours and extended travel times.
Key Closures to Watch Out For
This weekend, the following closures will substantially impact traffic:
- Northbound State Route 51: Closed between Interstate 10 (Mini-Stack Interchange) and Colter Street, commencing at 9 p.m. Friday and concluding at 5 a.m. Monday. This essential closure is part of a pavement improvement project to enhance roadway quality.
- Eastbound Loop 202 (Santan Freeway): Closed between Price Road and Arizona Avenue from 10 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday to facilitate a widening project aimed at improving traffic flow.
Additional restrictions include ramp closures on I-10 and Loop 202 affected by the northbound SR 51 closure, and southbound Loop 101 ramps leading to eastbound Loop 202 will also be closed.
Planning Your Route
Drivers should consider alternative routes such as northbound I-17 or local roads like Chandler Boulevard and Germann Road to navigate around the closures. ADOT encourages people to allow extra travel time and utilize available detour routes. For instance, you can use northbound 16th, 24th, or 32nd streets near the closed sections.
Additional Restrictions in the Valley
Further restrictions are also anticipated:
- Northbound Interstate 17: Narrowed to two lanes near Loop 303 from 9 p.m. Friday to 2 p.m. Saturday for ongoing improvement work.
- Westbound Loop 101: It will be narrowed to two lanes between I-17 and 51st Avenue due to related construction.
In addition, the northbound I-17 on-ramp at Deer Valley Road will remain closed until mid-June as part of the ongoing widening initiative.
Final Thoughts: Stay Informed and Drive Carefully
As with many construction projects, timing may change due to inclement weather or other unforeseen factors. ADOT recommends that motorists keep abreast of real-time highway conditions through the Arizona Traveler Information site or the az511 app. Safety should always come first, so drive cautiously when approaching work zones and detour routes.
